Warm Ups

Part I - Why Warm-ups are Important for Preventing Injuries

What is the purpose of doing a warm-up before your workout?  Is it literally just to “warm” the muscles up?

The answer is, YES!  But there is more to it.  The purpose of a warm-up is not only to get the muscles warm, but it is also to prepare the muscles for activity and connect the brain to the body.

Having the muscles warm makes them more pliable like an elastic band.  If you take an elastic band, throw it in the freezer, then take it out and stretch it, there is a higher chance that the band is going to snap.  Same idea with your muscles!  If your muscles are warm and more pliable then there is a decreased risk of injury.

It is important to think about which muscles you will be using during your workout or sport.  Studies have shown that neuromuscular training (ie building the brain-to-body connections), used during a warm-up helps reduce the risk of injuries during the sport or workout.  Neuromuscular training includes exercises to help build strength, coordination, mobility, balance, sport-specific agility, and landing techniques.  These exercises are meant to prepare the body for what is about to come in your workout or sport.
